Brightening Lives Elderly Social Stimulation

How day care works

Our personalised day care service runs from 10 am to 3 pm for small groups of 4 to 5 people. The day begins with Jenny collecting people from home.  It's then back to Jenny's home in Woodside Road, Woodford Green, where the groups are held and everyone is welcomed with tea/ coffee and biscuits whilst the group talks about what activities they might want to do that day. Bless Support is a very personal service, where Jenny encourages individuals to participate in a very relaxed way and the aim is very much for everyone to enjoy themselves and spend time in a social environment with others. Various activities aimed to stimulate and encourage socialisation, friendship and enjoyment are all part of the day.

A two course home cooked meal is then enjoyed by the group before afternoon activities commence.  They may play bingo, dominoes or play cards; alternatively may watch some old musicals and even do a spot of dancing or look through books of years gone by, on nature, plants or flowers.  It really depends on an individual’s mobility and interests – the most important thing is that the group have a fun and fulfilled time when they attend.  Carers of attendees often find there are many benefits to their loved ones attending the groups and having some time in a different environment enjoying social stimulation.

If mobility of the group allows, Bless Support also organises occasional lunch out, visits to the local park or garden centre and even day trips to the seaside.  The day finishes at 3.00 pm when the group are all personally driven home, by which time their carers have hopefully also benefitted by having some ‘time out’ for the day too.

Individual 1 to 1 Care

1 to 1 care may also be available for individuals who need support doing things they enjoy and accessing different places within their community that due to their illness they are no longer able to do alone. If they have mobility problems and lack confidence, having someone they can trust and rely on to help and enable them can make all the difference. This may include going to a cricket match, the driving range or visiting where they used to live.  Accessing activities an individual enjoys could reduce feelings of isolation, thereby improving their mental and physical well-being.
